Troubleshooting the Exchange 2007/Exchange 2010 OAB

When we did our Exchange 2007 segregated GAL to Exchange 2010 segregated GAL migration we’ve run into trouble with the Exchanga Offline Address Book on the Exchange 2010 server. When we moved the generation server for the OAB’s to the Exchange 2010 server, none of our users could download the OAB to the Outlook client. This are the steps you need to follow if you want to troubleshoot the OAB generation and distribution:
1. Make sure Your exchange 2010 Mailbox server is OAB generating Server.

2. Go to C:Program FilesMicrosoftExchange ServerV14ExchangeOAB >(guid value) and make sure you have 1 XML and daily LZX files in side that folder
3. On CAS server restart Microsoft Exchange File Distribution service.
4. Go to IIS > default website > and under OAB see if you have the folder with the same guid value.
5. Go to C:Program FilesMicrosoftExchange ServerV14client accessOAB
Check if there is the folder with the same guid.
6. Authenticated users should have at least read permission on OAB folder.(C:Program FilesMicrosoftExchange ServerV14Client AccessOAB)
7. Check the authentication type as below :

  • Autodiscover: Basic and Integrated authentication   SSL Optional
  • EWS : Integrated authentication                            NO SSL
  • Exadmin : Basic and Integrated authentication       NO SSL
  • Exchange : Basic and Integrated authentication      SSL Optional
  • Exchweb : Basic and Integrated authentication       NO SSL
  • Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync: Basic authentication   SSL Optional
  • OAB : Integrated authentication                             NO SSL
  • OWA : Basic authentication                                 SSL Optional
  • Public : Basic and Integrated authentication          SSL Optional

In our case the problem was that Authenticated Users had no permissions on the Client Access folder. As soon as I’ve assigned the read permission to the Authenticated Users group the users were able to download the OAB to the Outlook clients.

Hope that this was helpful.
